A Day in the Life...
Let us share what a day in the life of a volunteer is like in Kahama and Zanzibar
Day in the Life in Kahama
Kahama is the fourth largest city in mainland Tanzania, famous for it's gold mining industry. Kahama is very "local" meaning they do not experience foreign visitors very often. If you are looking for a true local experience, Kahama is the best choice.

-
Students are usually on a regimented schedule with 5-7 volunteer hours per day 5 days a week.. We are in the throes of building a community center so we are participating in manual labor outdoors.
-
We do our best to incorporate team building activities, discussion and journaling time as well as planned activities on our days off, including visits to the village and the local pool.
-
We provide 3 local meals a day except on days off.
-
There are four dorm rooms in Kahama, each sleeping four people. There are shared bathrooms on the premises with a TV, Wifi and a small kitchen and hang out area.
-
Students can also spend their free time in our new game room with a ping pong table, darts, yoga mats, small weights a punching bag, lots of hang out spaces and a snack shack.
-
Students will be responsible for helping with cooking and cleaning as well as doing their own laundry.
-
Immersing in the local community is what students find to be the most rewarding part of being in Kahama. We often find ourselves outside with the kids, dancing and playing football. We have also become quite attached to a local orphanage and will spend some of our free days there.
Day in the Life in Zanzibar
Zanzibar is truly paradise on earth; an island off of the Indian Ocean and home to Freddie Mercury. Zanzibar is quite idyllic and attracts tourists from all over the world. Students will build a roof for a local family during their first week, and work at the turtle sanctuary their second week. This year, students will have the choice during week three at either the turtle sanctuary or working with a local textile company.

-
Students are usually on a regimented schedule with around 5 volunteer hours per day 5 days a week.. All of our projects are outdoors.
-
Since tourism is the main industry on the island, cultural immersion has to be a bit more intentional, so we spend our first week with a village tour, learning the language and only eating local food. in addition to the projects we are engaged in. We wait to participate in any tourist activities.
-
We provide three local meals a day (except on days off). After the first week, students may be allowed to order food from restaurants at their own expense.
-
Students will live in dorm style accommodations with shared bathrooms.
-
We will have a cleaning and cooking rotation schedule so all students can participate in these activities equally.
-
We do our best to incorporate team building activities, discussion and journaling time as well as planned activities. With the ocean just being a three-minute walk from the property, a lot of our off-campus activities will be on the beach.
-
The facility has many cool things for students to do. They can enjoy a nice swim in the pool, play sand volleyball, hook up Netflix for an outdoor movie, or just chill and read a book in the hammocks, to name a few.
-
Students will have two days off per week. We try to reserve one day a week with little to no planning so students can choose how to spend their day get caught up on laundry or souvenir shopping
